LivHealth

Redefining livestock disease surveillance

LivHealth – Simple, Smart, Efficient

LivHealth is an electronic syndromic surveillance system that enables the county veterinary authorities to collect, collate and analyse data on livestock disease syndromes in order to identify disease indicators in real-time for early detection and rapid response.

Surveillance Network

We have an extensive surveillance network

The LivHealth team has helped the counties establish an extensive network of community disease reporters (CDRs) who live together with the pastrolists communities and are the main source of information of diseases affecting the communities. This information is passed on to the sub-county veterinary officers who records it in the system

In addition to the CDR reports LivHealth has helped establish data collection points at private agrovet shops, livestock markets, wildlife conservancies and in some wildlife parks in order to get a full picture of the diseases circulating in a particular region.

How it works

The 3-tier system of disease reporting

Identification

At this stage, the pastrolists and/or the CDRs, who are tendering for the animals, may notice a problem with their animals. The CDRs have been trained to identify sick or unwell animals and the different symptoms to look out for when dealing with the animals. Depending on the symptoms which the animals are exihibiting, the CDR may determine the next appropriate action.

Reporting

In the reporting stage, the CDR calls their respective sub-county veterinary officers (SCVOs) and give a detailed report on the syndromes that are being exhibited by the animals. This report is usually via a phone call initiated by either party.

Recording

The SCVO receiving the report from the CDR records the report being received by filling a structured form on their mobile phones. This form is structured such that it is simple and easy to fill and captures most if not all information that can be provided by the CDR regarding to the sick animals. The SCVO then submits the record to an online dashboard which collates and analyses the received information.

Feedback

Feedback is the last stage in disease reporting. The CDR receive an immediate feedback via an SMS acknowledging the received report. The SCVOs receive a weekly report via SMS of the received reports across the counties, while the county director of veterinany services (CDVS) and team receive a refined weekly report of the received reports across the county and a bi-weekly report on disease trends
